龟兹菱格故事汇第18期克孜尔第17窟摩诃萨埵舍身饲虎局部正在吃摩诃萨埵身上的肉摩诃萨埵太子舍身饲虎佛过去是大宝王的第三子，名摩诃萨埵，心地善良，怜悯一切有一天，三位王子游戏于林间，发现一只母虎正给刚出生的小虎喂奶，母虎饥饿难耐，似乎想要吃掉两只小虎。

见此情景，摩诃萨埵对两个哥哥说：“这只老虎虚弱不堪，应该给它吃些什么东西呢？”两个哥哥回答说：“只有新鲜的血肉才能救活它！”摩诃萨埵心中念道：这世上的人，或有为贪欲而死，或有为仇恨而死，或有为愚痴而死，很少有人是为了法道而死的，今天正是考验我的时刻！于是，摩诃萨埵就让两个哥哥先回去，自己爬上一座高山，举身投下，落于虎前。

老虎因极度虚弱，连嘴都张不开，无法进食摩诃萨埵就顺手找到一根尖锐的木头，刺向自己的身体，饿虎舔食其血，恢复了一点体力，然后就去吃他身上的肉国王、王后听说摩诃萨埵舍身施虎的事迹，震惊万分，他们急忙赶到林间，看到了王子的残骸，悲痛欲绝，好几次昏死过去。

就在这时，空中出现了一位天神，说：“国王！不必悲伤，我就是你的儿子摩诃萨埵，因为舍身施虎的功德，升到了天宫，生死是必然的规律，生必有终，生前作恶，死后堕入地狱，行善积德，死后就能升天！”在悲伤中，国王渐渐醒悟过来，把摩诃萨埵的骨灰装进七宝函中，予以埋葬，并在上面建了一座高塔，作为永久的纪念。

图中上部一人从空跌下，即太子投身之情景下面母虎和二虎正在太子身上啖食两个情节绘于一个画面中，故事内容一目了然选自《贤愚经》卷一Prince Mahasattva Feeds Himself to the Tigress。

The Buddha was the third son of Karmapa. He was named Mahasattva. He was kind-hearted and full of compassion. One day, three princes were playing in the woods when they spotted a tigress breast-feeding her two newborn cubs. The tigress was so hungry that it seemed as if it were devouring its two cubs. Seeing this, Mahasattva said to his two brothers, “What should we feed the tigress that seems to be so weak?” His brothers replied, “Only fresh meat can save it!”

Mahasattva whispered: “In this world, some die from greed and lust, some die from hatred, some die from imbecility, but few die for the sake of Dharma. Today comes the day that tests me!” Then Mahasattva asked his brothers to go back first while he climbed up a high mountain and jumped down just in front of the tigress. But the tigress was so weak that it even couldn’t open its mouth and feed on food. Mahasattva then found a sharp-pointed wood nearby with which he cut his body so that the hungry tigress could lap his blood to refresh itself before it could feed on his flesh.

On learning the story of Mahasattva feeding himself to the tigress, the king and queen were in such great panic that they rushed to the woods only to find the remains of their son. They were overcome with grief and fainted several times. Just then, a deity turned up in the sky and said to them, “Don’t be so grieved. I am your son Mahasattva. Just because of my virtue of sacrificing myself to save the tigress, I have been brought to the heavenly palace. It is an inexorable law to live and die. There is an end to life. Whoever is evil-doing in his life will go to hell after death. Whoever does good and accumulates merits in his life will be brought to heaven after death.”

The king came to realize the truth from his grief and put Mahasattva’s remains in a Saptaratna casket and buried it. The king had a stupa built on top of it as an everlasting monument to his son.
