An attempt to arrest Somali warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid and most of his advisors sparked a 2 day battle that resulted in 19 US servicemen and over 300 Somalis killed with hundreds more wounded. The events were popularly chronicled in the book “Black Hawk Down” and movie by the same title.

Why significantUS forces were in Somalia as part of a UN mission to end the violence between local warlords that was resulting in the starvation of millions. On October 3, a major mission attempted to arrest Aidid in retaliation of a strike against UN troops. While successful in getting many of his advisors, the US soldiers missed Aidid and were unprepared for a general counterattack that shot down two helicopters and ambushed the column while exiting. The mission was found to be under equipped for a general uprising of this nature and shortly after, US involvement in the UN mission was removed.
