沧州刘士玉孝廉，有书室为狐所据，白昼与人对语，掷瓦石击人，但不睹其形耳In the study of Liu Shiyu, the provincial graduate of Canzhou, lived a fox monster, it took issue with people in the day and throws tiles at them, however, no one could see any sign of it.。

知州平原董思任，良吏也，闻其事，自往驱之Heard of this, Mayor Dong Siren, a respectable official, came and intended to drive out the fox monster.。

方盛陈人妖异路之理，忽檐际朗言曰：“公为官颇爱，亦不取钱，故我不敢击公然公爱民乃好名，不取钱乃畏后患耳，故我亦不避公公休矣，毋多言取困”董狼狈而归，咄咄不怡者数日He came into the room and harangue the difference between human and monsters. Suddenly, voices were heard from the eaves : ”As an official, you cherish your people and do not take money from them, so I dare not throw a tile at you. However, you do all of this just for good reputation and avoid no end of troubles in the future, I won’t hide from you. So dont ask for trouble by saying more” The mayor left in embarrassment and was fidget for days.。

刘一仆妇甚粗蠢，独不畏狐狐亦不击之Liu Shiyu had a maidservant, very rude, but she is not afraid of fox monster, and the fox monster never hit her with tiles.。

或于对语时，举以问狐狐曰：“彼虽下役，乃真孝妇也鬼神见之犹敛避，况我曹乎！”Someone ask fox why, the monster replied: ”Although she was a lowly housemaid, she was a true dutiful woman. Gods and spirits see her to hide their footprints and then run away, let alone me a monster.”。

刘乃令仆妇居此室狐是日即去Liu Shiyu then ask the housemaid to live in his study, and the monster left that day.
