上海大学法学院的历史，可追溯到始建于1978年的复旦大学分校法律系1983年，复旦大学分校、华东师范大学仪表电子分校、上海外国语学院分院、上海科学技术大学分校、上海机械学院轻工分院和上海市美术学校合并组建为上海大学，原复旦大学分校法律系改称上海大学文学院法律系。

1993年4月，上海法律高等专科学校并入上海大学，与文学院法律系合并成立上海大学法学院，办学地点在上海市青浦区野马浜，同年11月文学院设立涉外经济法系1994年5月，上海工业大学、上海科学技术大学、原上海大学和上海科技高等专科学校合并组建为新的上海大学，并于同年9月成立上海大学知识产权学院。

1998年5月，文学院涉外经济法系与知识产权学院合并成立新的知识产权学院2004年9月，经上海市人民政府批准，上海大学法学院成为独立设置的市属本科院校—上海政法学院2005年4月，在知识产权学院基础上组建现上海大学法学院（在其构建下保留知识产权学院建制），办学地点在宝山区上大路99号上海大学校本部。

In 1983, Fudan University Branch, East China Normal University Instrumentation and Electronics Branch, Shanghai International Studies Institute Branch, Shanghai University of Science and Technology Branch, Shanghai Institute of Light Industry Branch and Shanghai School of Fine Arts were merged to form Shanghai University. The former Law Department of Fudan University Branch was renamed Law Department of Shanghai University College of Arts. In April 1993, Shanghai College of Law merged with Shanghai University and merged with the Department of Law of the College of Arts to form the School of Law of Shanghai University. In November 1993, the Department of Foreign Economic Law of the College of Arts was established. In May 1994, Shanghai University of Technology, Shanghai University of Science and Technology, Shanghai University of Science and Technology and Shanghai High School of Science and Technology were merged to form the new Shanghai University. In September 1994, the Intellectual Property School of Shanghai University was established. In May 1998, the School of Foreign Economic Law and the School of Intellectual Property merged to form the new School of Intellectual Property. In September 2004, with the approval of the Shanghai Municipal Government, the School of Law of Shanghai University became Shanghai University of Political Science and Law, an independent municipal undergraduate institution. In April 2005, the School of Law of Shanghai University was founded on the basis of the School of Intellectual Property (the School of Intellectual Property is retained under the schools structure), and the school is located in the main campus of Shanghai University, No. 99 Shangda Road, Baoshan District.
