这部作品中，纪伯伦塑造了一位名叫“亚墨斯达法”（Almustafa）的智者他正准备回到阔别已久的故乡，就在他依依惜别的时刻，一位对他抱有诚信的女子“爱尔美差”（Almitra）来到殿前广场，向作别的智者表达最诚挚的祝愿，请他“说讲真理”。

于是智者开始回答送行者的提问这些提问涉及到“生和死中间的一切”，人生和社会的26个方面——爱与憎，美与丑，善与恶，罚与罪，工作与逸乐，理性与热情，法律与自由，婚姻与友谊，教育与宗教......他要把人类的“真我”披露给人们。

这里我们采用冰心先生的译本，欣赏一些摘句1.《船的到来》Shall the day of parting be the day of gathering?And shall it be said that my eve was in truth my dawn?。

别离的日子能成为聚会的日子么？我的薄暮实在可算是我的黎明么？

2.《爱》Love possesses not nor would it be possessed;For love is sufficient unto爱不占有，也不被占有因为爱在爱中满足了Love has no other desire but to fulfil itself.。

爱没有别的愿望，只要成全自己。

3.《婚姻》Love one another but make not a bond of love：彼此相爱，但不要做成爱的系链：......And stand together, yet not too near toghther:

For the pillars of the temple stand apart,And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in each others shadow.

要站在一处，却不要太密迩：因为殿里的柱子，也是分立在两旁，橡树和松柏，也不在彼此的荫中生长。

4.《孩子》Your children are not your children.They are the sons and daughters of Lifes longing for itself.

你们的孩子，都不是你们的孩子乃是生命为自己所渴望的儿女They come through you but not from you.And though they are with you, yet they belong not to you.。

You may give them your love but not your thoughts.他们是凭借你们而来，却不是从你们而来他们虽和你们同在，却不属于你们你们可以给他们关爱，却不可给他们以思想。

5.《工作》You work that you may keep pace with the earth and the soul of the earth.你工作是要与大地和大地的精神一同前进And what is it to work with love?。

怎样才是仁爱的工作呢？It is to charge all things you fashion with a breath of your own spirit;这就是用你自己灵魂的气息，来充满你所制造的一切。

6，《自知》For self is a sea boundless and neasureless.因为自我乃是一片无边无际的海Say not , "I have found the truth," but rather, "I have found a truth."。

不要说“我找到了真理”，只要说“我找到了一条真理”Say not, "I have found the path of the soul," Say rather, "I have met the soul walking upon my path."。

不要说“我找到了灵魂的道路”，只要说“我遇见了灵魂在我的道路上行走。”

7.《友谊》When your friend speaks his mind you fear not the "nay" in your own mind, nor do you withhold the "ay."

当你的朋友向你倾吐胸臆的时候，你不要怕说出心中的“否”，也不要瞒住你心中的“可”。

8.《善恶》Of the good in you I can speak, but not of the evil.我能谈你们的善性，却不能谈你们的恶性For what is evil but good tortured by its own hunger and thirst?。

因为，什么是“恶”，不只是“善”被他自身的饥渴所困苦么？9.《美》People of Orphalese, beauty is life when life unveils her holy face.

But you are life and you are the veil.阿法利斯的民众呵，在生命揭露圣洁的面容的时候的美，就是生命但你就是生命，你也是面纱Beauty is eternity gazing at itself in a mirror.。

But you are eternity and you are the mirror.美是永生揽镜自照。但你就是永生，你也是镜子。

选用冰心先生的译本，是因为正是冰心先生第一次把纪伯伦的代表作《先知》完整地介绍给中国的读者1927年冬，冰心先生从美国友人那里初次读到《先知》，她就被吸引住了，“那满含着东方气息的超妙的哲理和流利的文辞”让她“觉得有喷溢的欲望，愿意让不会读原文的读者，也能享受”她“读这本书时的欣悦，景仰和伤感”。
